Class Descriptions

MMA – Mixed martial arts or MMA is the blending of several different martial arts into one system. It involves training in the basics of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, wrestling, and boxing. The reason we have the best team around is because of the way we train by putting the different martial arts traditions together. If you want to be a mixed martial artist you must train in all of these arts to become great!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) – The focus of this class is on learning the positions, self-defense applications, techniques, and strategies used in BJJ.  This class will help you to learn real self defense for the streets and also to prepare for competitive tournaments.  Our students will learn how to do basic takedowns along with basic and advanced positions and techniques on the ground including chokes, arm locks, leg locks, throws, sweeps, & trips. 

Wrestling – The wrestling classes are designed for all ages and experience levels. Our Port City Wrestling Club team will mainly be for under 18 competition, but we will have some senior tournaments as well.  We use a folk-style, the main style practiced in the US, basis and also add in elements from Greco-Roman and Freestyle (greco & freestyle are international & Olympic styles of wrestling). 

Judo – is generally categorized as a modern martial art, which has since evolved into a combat and Olympic sport. Judo is mainly practiced while wearing a gi (kimono) and is consists of throwing techniques, trips, sweeps, pins, and submission holds.

Fitness Kickboxing – This class gives you the opportunity to train like a professional competitor. You will do all the same exercises a competitor does when preparing for a competition. The only difference is that you will not be sparring. All the exercises, drills, and bag work are the same ones we use to train our pros. You can burn 800 calories/hour in this class!!

Thai Boxing – This is an all-levels class! It is a really good class for getting in shape and learning the fundamentals of Thai boxing. Lots of drill and bag work with no sparring. Great workout and lots of fun! 

Open Mats – Grappling classes with live sparring in all the grappling arts we train. These are great classes for getting in shape and preparing for competition. Bring proper equipment for the proper class. 

Kids, Juniors, & Teens BJJ – We use the Gracie self defense system to teach kids proper self defense. We also use the proven arts used in MMA (boxing, muay thai, wrestling, judo/sambo and BJJ) competition to make your kids into well-rounded martial artists. The class is good for building self confidence, strength, coordination, and balance. We will teach them real world self defense, not theories and forms.
