MMA Explained

Mixed Martial Arts as a form of modern tournament fighting could be said to have started in the 80s, with bouts (professional fights) that pitted practitioners of different schools of martial arts against each other, with fewer rules than most types of bouts previously. Later on, individual fighters began to incorporate multiple different martial art styles, allowing them greater flexibility and unpredictability of technique. Since then, the sport has increased in popularity enormously, with a pay-per-view business that rivals boxing and pro wrestling. The future of MMA fighting looks bright!

MMA Fighting Styles

The overall aim of MMA fighting is to defeat your opponent with grappling, striking, and throwing techniques. Here are the most common styles that MMA fighters rely on:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is fundamentally a martial arts system for grappling, incorporating holds, chokes, and locks, to successfully succeed in on-the-ground combat. Specifically designed to help smaller, weaker practitioners overcome stronger, larger opponents, BJJ is a very popular, very effective MMA fighting style.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai is a martial art system that specializes in knee-and-elbow moves. Many such moves have been incorporated into MMA at the top, competitive levels, due to their effectiveness. If you want to learn Muay Thai in Mobile, Port City Kickboxing has some of the best Muay Thai classes around. Sign up today!

Submission Wrestling

Wrestling has influenced MMA in many ways. For example, many MMA submission combinations and arm holds come from wrestling. Learning to wrestle provides a valuable skill set for any MMA fighter.

Kickboxing is generally recognized as part of the foundation techniques for striking in MMA. Kickboxing involves a group of standing-up kicks and punches, which was developed in Japan out of karate and Muay Thai. Kickboxing can serve as a very important technique in any MMA fighter’s arsenal.
